As I said in my intro I'm not the best at playing. I was playing a cash game last night on cake and i won a particular hand. One guy that was in the hand with me said nh, I replied with ty, and some other guy who wasn't even in the hand started mouthing off saying that since I had the nut hand( I had an ace high straight) I should have raised and a bunch of other things. One thing that he had said was I shouldn't be playing if I didn't know what I was doing. Okay... this was only a 2/4 cent game... it's not like I was playing to win a million. I was only calling the other bets rather than raising, is that really wrong? I don't know........ I want to learn more about betting and raising but I don't know if that guy had a hair in his butt for some reason or if I was really wrong for just calling. All suggestions would be great.
THANK YOU, tequila19

well if he bet into you after the river card if you had the nut hand i would have definetly raised to get as much as you could from him. when you have the nut hand try and get as much as you can off the hand. i wouldn't raise to much, you don't want to scare him off the pot. good luck tequila.

Hey Rat, to tell you the truth I didn't realize I had the nut hand until the guy that was saying stuff said I had the nut. I didn't bet once during the hand, I was only calling. But regardless if I knew or not isn't it only hurting myself by not raising?

The problem with some players is they assume that if you have a monster hand you or the "nuts" then you should push hard. I am slowly but surely learning that this is not the case. If you have anther player in the hand with you and you are doing the betting with the nuts and it is a forceful bet they will most likely get off the pot (not so much at .02/.04). Now if on the other side of that coin you have the nuts and you let them bet and you just flat call there is nothing wrong at all with that. Let them "pay you". Don't let other players tell you how to play your game, only you can do that:amen:

i disagree with one part of chris' reply. if their betting into you i can agree on just calling to the river. but imo the river bet you must raise if they bet into you if you have the nut. the worst you can do is chop, why not try and get a few more bucks out of them. then if they muck you don't need to show your cards and keep your opponants (how do u spell it LOL) scratching there head on how to play you.
in your case tequila you didn't even know you had the nuts. concentration can make or break you in poker

Good point there Rat, I was writing first thing this morning so I have obviously missed a good point. Also true is the point about concentration. Concentrating too hard or reading too much into a hand can really have effects on your play. I would say that if you don't have a good enough read on the person it is best not to over ****yze their actions. In this case that was not the situation but it can happen.

If you know you have the best hand, you should be rasing to get the most money possible. If you dont think you have the best hand, but trying to catch, might wanna fold. There are times to call tho,if you arent sure.
